Commercial Walk Behind Mowers

Commercial walk behind mowers are the professional's choice to start mowing commercially. True commercial duty mowers from Scag, Exmark, Encore, Bob-Cat, Ferris and others are tough machines that stripe well and handle the day to day beating that commercial mowing gives. Walk behinds range in size from 32" to 61 inch decks. The most basic walk behind mowers are belt driven with 12 hp and larger engines. A step up from belt driven models are hydro mowers. They require a little more power to run the hydro pump so you often see larger engines on a hydro driven mower compared to the same width belt driven mowers. Mower decks can be fixed or floating. Both do a great job. Operator controls depend on the manufacturer. Most basic walk behind mowers use pistol grip handles with left and right control levers. Squeeze the left handle and you turn left. Squeeze the right handle to turn right. Very simple. Toro made the original T-Bar style controls which are easier on hands. Exmark and some others have their unique controls.

Bob-Cat Walk Behind Mowers

Another mower company that's been around awhile is Bob-Cat. They make very good quality commercial walk behind mowers in 32", 36" and 48" belt driven and 36", 48" and 54". Belt driven walk behinds all use piston grip controls. You have the option of soft grip piston grip controls or try their Z-Control for Bob-cat hydro models. Z-Control is more comfortable for most users because it's easier on the hands.

Encore Walk Behind Mowers

I started with a belt drive 48 Encore walk behind. It was probably the best mower that I ever owned from a low cost and durability standpoint. They are still built heavy with great blade top speed (aids in a better cut). A few years after buying the 48, I bought a 36 inch deck Encore mower to go through gates. It was equally tough.

Toro Walk Behind Mowers

Toro has been an innovator in the walk behind market for several decades. Their T-Bar style controls revolutionized the walk behind mower. In the past, Toro walk behinds were not the toughest mowers when compared to Scag, Exmark and others. The biggest knock on them was their thinner stamped steel decks. 2011 Toro walk behind mowers have 7 gauge welded steel decks with a large front steel rib that runs the width of the deck. Toro has improved their walk behind immensely by just this one quality addition. If you are in the used market, the older stamped mower decks sometimes rust quickly if not taken care of. If your crew is hard on mowers, an older Toro may not be for you. If you are reasonable with equipment, the older style Toro walk behinds mow very well.



Wright Velke Walk Behind Mowers

If you want a great quality, more compact professional walk behind, the Wright Velke might be the right choice. With great Wright quality and features like a strong deck, Wright has a winner. Velke Gear Drive mowers have 5 speed transmissions and come in 32, 36 and 48 inch deck options. A 16 HP Kawasaki engine is your only option. The belt (gear drive) mower has twin drive belts for maximum drive performance. The Velke Hydro walk behind is available in 32, 36, 48 and 52 inch deck options. Choose between 16, 18 or 20 HP Kawasaki engines. The Velke hydro has the largest drive tires in the industry and simpler hydro drive controls than most other mowers.
